Baccarat is the glamorous game made famous by the iconic James Bond movies. Sometimes known as Punto Banco and Chemin de Fer, this intriguing game is favoured by high flyers from Vegas to Macau.
Want to know how to Play and Win at Baccarat? Read on!
There’s only one goal in playing Baccarat and that’s to bet on the winning side. And the winning hand is the one that totals 9 or the closest to it. The dealer is in control of every aspect of the game so make your bet – dealer, player or tie.
When it comes to counting the total of your two cards, just remember:
Aces count 1
2 to 9 count at face value
10 and picture cards count as 0
For example, a 9 + 5 equals 14 so drop the first digit and your hand totals 4
K + Q + Q equals 30 for a total of 0
10 + 9 equals 19 for a total of 9
The dealer deals two hands of two cards on the table, the banker’s hand and the player’s hand. If your cards total 8 or 9, then congratulations! You hit a natural win and no more cards will be dealt. However, if there’s no natural win on the table, that’s when things get a little more complicated and the rules of Baccarat kick in:
If the player’s total is 6 or above they stand without drawing an additional card. If their total is 5 or less they must draw an extra card.
If the banker total’s 7 they stand. If the player draws then the banker must also draw if their cards total 5 or lower.
You’ll find the rules of the online game outlined at all our Baccarat tables.
Now you know how to play Baccarat, but what about winning?
The first thing you need to remember about Baccarat is that it’s a pure game of chance – win or lose, it’s all the luck of the cards. However, there are some strategies you can put in place to feel like a winner every time you play:
Players love Baccarat because there’s a very low house edge on two out of the three bets. And that’s the first way to win at Baccarat – never bet on a tie. This bet might look attractive as it pays out 8-1 but the house edge is nearly 10%, one of the highest in any casino game.
There’s a slight statistical edge in favour of the banker who wins 51% of the time. The banker is clearly the smart bet, but you will pay 5% commission on every win.
Essentially you’re betting on the toss of a coin so good money management is crucial. Stay in control by setting a bankroll limit for your session and taking regular time outs. Be prepared to walk away from the table and never play with money you can’t afford to lose. If you do win a decent amount, split it between your bank and your bankroll before you play again.
Try a few practice hands before you play for real money and always check out the rules before you play. Learn the tricks of the trade playing a basic version of the game before you move on to other versions.
